This week brought good news for those affected with lackluster iPhone battery life after upgrading to iOS 5. Help is on the way.Apple copped to the quick drainage problem and said it was working on a fix in the form of a software update that will arrive to users in the "next few weeks."In the meantime, the company pushed out two uncharacteristically quick, nearly back to back betas of iOS 5.0.1 to developers, the software that includes the fix, along with patches to other bugs that were in the initial release of the iOS 5 software. That right there is a good sign we could get the software fix sooner than expected.Read on for a rundown of everything else that happened this week in Apple land.NewsApple gives top execs big bonusesA flurry of new filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission posted yesterday show Apple's top executives getting bonuses with big payouts that hinge on them staying with the company through the end of 2016. Most got 150,000 shares, worth a little more than $60 million based on yesterday's closing Apple stock price. Apple's Eddy Cue pulled in another 100,000 shares to go with the bonus he got when he became a senior vice president at the beginning of September. Apple misses iTunes Match launch deadlineApple this week missed the deadline it laid out last month to bring its iTunes Match service to users by the end of October. That's the service that scans your iTunes library and replaces any tracks you've ripped with full-quality copies from Apple's iTunes Music Store, that is if they have a license to it and you're a paid subscriber of the service. Apple followed up this week by releasing a new developer beta of iTunes with the feature enabled. Siri experienced another outage this week.CNETSiri experiences second outageApple's Siri service, the voice assistant feature that's exclusive to the recently launched iPhone 4S, underwent its second major outage this week. The service was down, or otherwise spotty for a little less than three hours on Thursday afternoon, returning to normal without an explanation from Apple. The feature, which turns voice commands into actions on the phone, requires being piped through Apple's servers to work. iPhone 4S arriving in 15 additional countries November 11Later this month, the iPhone 4S will be arriving in 15 more countries including Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, El Salvador, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Malta, Montenegro, New Zealand, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and South Korea. Preorders for those countries began yesterday.Apple's NYC "cube" reopensApple's highest-profile store in the Big Apple re-opened this week following a nearly five-month construction overhaul. Work on the store, which is one of the most photographed landmarks in New York, began in mid-June. The company tweaked the design of its iconic glass cube "by using larger, seamless pieces of glass." Apple overhauling whole product line in 2012?Apple's product line is set to get some big makeovers next year, if a new report is to be believed. Citing sources in "the upstream supply chain," tech news site Digitimes said this week that Apple plans to "overhaul" its iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air and iMac during the course of next year. "If you look at studies about MP3 players, especially leading MP3 players and what portion of that content is pirated, and think about how that content gets onto that device, it has to go through a gatekeeping piece of software, which would be a convenient place to put some antipiracy measures," Kliavkoff said in an onstage interview at the Ad:Tech conference here. "One of the big issues for NBC is piracy. We are financially harmed every day by piracy. It results in us not being able to invest as much money in the next generation of film and TV products."Apple's iTunes service has become the largest music retailer in the United States, but relations between Apple and NBC Universal are strained. In 2007, NBC Universal pulled its TV content from iTunes when the two companies disagreed about pricing. Kliavkoff made it clear that he'd like the conduit back, though."We'd love to be on iTunes. It has a great customer experience. We'd love to figure out a way to distribute our content on iTunes," he said, but wouldn't comment on any negotiations. "We have film distribution with iTunes so yes, we do talk to Apple," he said.Price appears still to be a sticking point. NBC Universal sets a wholesale price for content it offers to distributors, and then distributors are free to set the retail price."They can mark up the price and make a profit or use it as a loss leader to get people in the door," Kliavkoff said. "It's really difficult for us to work with any distribution partner who says 'Here's the wholesale price and the retail price,' especially when the price doesn't reflect the full value of the product.""The music industry guys would have something to say about how the pricing has affected their product over the last few years," he added.The Apple-NBC Universal spat has been a game of brinksmanship over which company needs the other more. Analysts at Forrester Research think Apple needs the content more than NBC needs the distribution.NBC Universal, through a 50-50 partnership with NBC and News Corp., has its own mechanism to view entertainment TV shows on the Web: Hulu. However, the site doesn't offer downloads and doesn't support mobile devices, at least today.Hulu is in part an attempt to combat piracy on Google's YouTube, Kliavkoff said."It used to be that at the end of Saturday Night Live, YouTube would have clips up faster. You can fight that all you want, but until you provide a place to go at 1:05 a.m. Eastern time that has the digital short, you won't get anywhere." Now, with Hulu, viewers can get the same content through legitimate channels.YouTube, he added, is a "fantastic promotional vehicle for some of our product," such as trailers. And it's the "market leader for amateur content." But sites like Hulu will change its position for professionally produced video, he predicted."I think that balance will shift a little bit. Best Buy is launching its own cloud-based music service that will let customers store and stream music from the Internet to their PCs and mobile devices.Dubbed simply Best Buy Music Cloud, the service is following in the footsteps of similar offerings from Amazon, Google, and Apple.Customers can upload their tunes to the Music Cloud and then stream them to their smartphone or tablet. Best Buy is promising that you can store your favorite music offline to listen to when you're not connected. Your playlists come along for the ride, so that you see the same ones across your PCs and mobile devices. And any new songs or playlists are automatically added to your account, accessible from the Web and your phone or tablet.Though Best Buy hasn't "officially" launched the service, according to Digital Trends, interested customers can sign up at the Music Cloud site. You'll then need to download and install the client software on your PC or Mac. Once installed, the Music Cloud software offers to scan your iTunes library. Yes, the service does require that your music be accessible through iTunes even if you're not an Apple or iOS user.You're then asked to add the name of your phone or tablet from a list of mobile devices. Further instructions are sent to your device via a text message and/or e-mail.The service supports iOS devices, Android devices, and BlackBerrys through their own respective mobile apps. However, I wasn't able to find an app at RIM's BlackBerry App World. And when I registered my iPad, Best Buy sent me a response e-mail with a registration code, but told me that the app for Apple devices will be available shortly.Once your music is uploaded, you should be able to log into your Music Cloud account to see all of your tunes and then sync your music through the mobile app on your device.Best Buy offers both a free "lite" version and a $3.99-per-month premium version, though it's not fully clear what the differences are between the two. Digital Trends claims that users of the free version will only be able to listen to 30 seconds of each song, while Boy Genius Report says the free edition provides access only to the Best Buy Web player and not to your mobile devices.A Best Buy blog post on Music Cloud makes the whole process sound relatively quick and simple. So now that the weekend is over, we can talk about our top secret trip...to Atlantic City! It's always good to get away for a little bit, even if it's just for a day, so we packed up our bags and took off to AC for a little gambling and good times. What was supposed to be a relaxing trip turned out to be 24 hours of "The Hangover"-esque partying. We all indulged in our own vices: Jeff hit the blackjack tables like a white bat out of hell, Justin explored the dark crevices of AC's back alleys, and Wilson Tang ate chicken. That's right, you read it correctly: Wilson Tang finally broke his "vegetarianism" and is now an official chicken chaser. Unfortunately, his bout with poultry at Friday's dinner left him with a mad stomach ache and he party pooped his way out of the trip. Actually, the long-awaited DTV transition went off without a hitch, which makes sense, because it's been in the works forever now, although we're pretty sure someone in Florida tried to eat her converter box. Facebook Vanity also had little to no effect on real life, although there did seem to be a slight flux in traffic on Thursday night as people rushed to reserve their own Facebook URLs. In the spirit of American sportsmanship, some of the landgrabs were a little disingenuous; for example, check out the profile for our own Molly Wood. In fact, my own name got snaked by another Justin Yu, so feel free to add him and let him know how much you love The 404. It's currently the No. 1 app in the education category of the U.S. iTunes App Store and has garnered more than 25,000 five-star reviews. It is also ranked No. 1 in the education category in 38 other countries and No. 5 overall among iTunes App Store free apps category in about 80 countries.The Lumosity app features games that help people improve their cognitive skills, such as retaining information and focusing attention.The company has been around since 2007, and has 45 million members, mostly for its web-based service. Lumos Labs recently overhauled its iPhone app, and the company launched an iPad app Thursday. According to the company, Lumosity's iPhone app has been downloaded over 19 million times since it launched in November 2012, and more than 35 million mobile games have been played in the past month. It also currently accounts for more than half of the company's user registrations. " In 2012, the company reported $24 million in revenue, double from the previous year. Research In Motion's first tablet computer will launch in North America in the first quarter and cost less than $500, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie told Bloomberg late yesterday.Unveiling the new BlackBerry PlayBook in September, RIM was mum on the cost until now. The PlayBook's price tag sets it up to compete with Apple's iPad, which costs $499 for the least expensive 16GB Wi-Fi-only model.The PlayBook has a 1,024x600 pixel, 7-inch display, which is smaller than the iPad's 9.7-inch screen. It includes both a front-facing and a rear-facing camera, and a 1GHz dual-core processor. The initial models will offer Wi-Fi-only connectivity, but RIM has said it plans to offer 3G and 4G models in the future. And unlike the iPad, the PlayBook will support Adobe Flash.The PlayBook may be available through retail stores such as Best Buy and Target as well as from mobile carriers, Balsillie told Bloomberg. Following its North American debut, the tablet will be released elsewhere in the second quarter. That technology was spotted by frequent code sniffer Hamza Sood (via 9to5Mac), who picked up on a folder inside iOS 7's code for "BiometricKitUI." That folder includes instructions for fingerprint recognition that can pick up on the person's left or right thumb while holding an iPhone.Apple spent $365 million on Authentec almost exactly a year ago. The company specialized in developing fingerprint sensors that can identify users. Authentec had Samsung, LG, and Motorola as customers before it was acquired. Rumors that Bing was to be the default search engine in an upcoming iPhone OS update can continue to be filed in the rumor bin, at least based on the developer preview release of OS 4.Bing is still nowhere to be seen in the iPhone's Safari app, or anywhere else in the preview version of the OS. Besides Google, which remains the default search engine, the only other option remains Yahoo.It's still possible that the Apple/Microsoft deal could be under way though. And if that's the case, it could just as easily make it into a future beta of the OS, or in the version that will be made available to iPhone owners sometime this summer.One interesting change worth noting is that Web searches are now more ingrained into the system search that was implemented in OS 3.0. Now, when doing a local search on your phone, the iPhone will spit up quick links for Web and Wikipedia searches using Safari. Apple is headed for a record quarter for iPhone sales, according to market researcher IHS iSuppli.The fourth quarter will be huge, iSuppli said in a research note today. "Apple's biggest quarter for iPhone sales in history." The iPhone 5 will drive Apple's smartphone shipments in 2012 to 149 million units, up 60 percent from 93 million in 2011, iSuppli said. "The new phone will be released with just over a week left in the third quarter, so most of the iPhone 5 sales bump in 2012 will be seen in the final [fourth] quarter of the year," iSuppli said. Some of this surge is due to buyers delaying iPhone purchases."Prospective buyers hold off on purchasing during the time leading up to the rollout of the new device. This phenomenon depressed iPhone sales in the second quarter of this year," according to iSuppli.
